A Pen That Doesn't Have To Live In Your Lounge

Sick of a pet pen standing in the corner because you have nowhere else to put it? This one is fabric on a pop-up frame, and it is light enough to move on your own. It suits a cat or a small dog. Folded, it is about 2 cm thick, so it stands on its edge in your hall cupboard.

Open, it is 73 × 73 × 43 cm with 8 sides. Each side has a mesh panel, so your pet gets air and a view of the room. The door zips, and it rolls up on 2 fabric tabs when you want it left open. The top unzips off the rim and lifts away. The floor is sewn to the sides, so there's no gap along the bottom to dig at.

Features:

It Lives Behind The Door When It's Not In Use

A pen you cannot fold has to live somewhere. It ends up in the corner of your lounge, standing there long after the kitten has stopped needing it.

This one folds down to 32 × 43 × 2 cm. It is flat enough to stand behind a door, slide under a bed, or lie flat in the car for the drive to the grandparents'. The first fold is the fiddly one.

It Stops Being A Pen And Becomes Its Place

Most pens are somewhere you put the cat. You shut the door behind it, and it sits by the zip waiting for you to open it again.

This one sits low, with mesh on the sides and a top that lifts away. Leave the door rolled up, and it stops being somewhere your cat has to be. Owners of this kind of pen keep using the same word for it. They call it the cave.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

Will it fold back down, or is that one of those things that only works in the factory?

It goes back down to the same flat 2 cm you started with. The honest part: the first fold takes some working out, and owners say so themselves. Do one before the day you need it, rather than in a hurry.

Is 73 cm actually big enough for my cat?

Set up: it is 73 cm across and 43 cm high. The maker measures by hand, so allow 1 to 2 cm either way. You get room in there for a bed, a bowl, and space to turn around.

What happens the first time there is a mess in there?

Unzip the top and lift it away so you can reach in from above. Then wipe the floor down with a damp cloth. Go over the mesh with the cloth rather than scrubbing it, and let the pen dry before you fold it.

I am bringing a kitten home to a cat that runs the house. Will they be able to see each other?

Yes. Mesh runs down 8 sides, so the older one can walk right up and look in, and the kitten can look back. They get the looking done first, and you are there while they do it.

Can I put it out on the deck?

Yes, while you are there with it. It is fabric and 43 cm high, so this is supervised time outside, not somewhere to leave it. The mesh keeps the mosquitoes and insects off it, which is why you would take an indoor cat out.

Does it need tools, or a second pair of hands?

Neither. It comes out of the box folded and pops into shape when you open it. There are no screws and no panels to clip together. Stand it where you want it, unzip the door, and it is ready.

Can I leave the top off, or does it have to stay on?

The top comes off, so it is your call. Leave it on for a kitten, and the mesh lets the light through. Take it off and roll the door up on its 2 tabs, and it turns into an open bed.
